Mohawk College (School of Justice and Wellness) – Hamilton, ON
Vicano Construction was awarded the role of Construction Manager on a major renovation project for the Mohawk College School of Justice and Wellness. Conversion of the old facility management shops into specialized tactical training areas for the Safety & Security program feature: living quarters, mock retail, a restaurant, a forensic lab, and a Tactical Flash Drill room for simulation and scenario training. Also included is an outdoor urban streetscape, complete with training vehicles, to simulate entry and exit into the mock retail and living quarter areas. Teaching of the program is further assisted by a dedicated multimedia debriefing room and mezzanine for student and instructor observation of tactical exercises.
The gymnasium is being converted into a lower level physical training complex with an upper level for classroom and court room academic programming. Structurally, the work is being accomplished by bringing in long-span beams to support a poured concrete deck for the second floor, which must also meet the dynamic load of the Use of Force training area. The ground floor opens into the former bookstore which is converted into a nutritional studio kitchen and wellness area for teaching, testing, and circuit training.
The project also features dedicated 8,000 square feet of newly renovated administrative space for faculty and staff of the Justice and Wellness program.
